Liverpool are set to complete their first signing of the summer, with 17-year-old centre-back Sepp van den Berg scheduled to take a medical on Wednesday, according to the Telegraph.

The report claims that Liverpool have beaten both Bayern Munich and Ajax to his signature, although he’s not expected to make an immediate impact in the Liverpool first-team.

Instead, he’ll spend next season developing before looking to make an impact under Jurgen Klopp.

van den Berg broke into the PEC Zwolle first team in the 17/18 season, before making 15 appearances last campaign.

VERDICT

Liverpool are on the brink of their first summer signing and while buying a 17-year-old for £1.79million might not get the Liverpool fans too excited, there are plenty of reasons to think he could be an absolute steal. van den Berg is reported to be one of the best young players in Dutch football – a league that boasts 19-year-old centre-back Matthijs de Ligt – and Sampdoria failed with a £2.25million bid for him in January. He won his way into the top-flight team of the week after just his third senior appearance in 2018 and has an impressive YouTube reel that belies his age. With just one year left on his contract, Zwolle are obviously taking advantage of this window to get a fee for a player who has caught the eye in Europe. All of that adds up to a victory for Liverpool , with the Liverpool Echo claiming his capture is seen as a coup for sporting director Michael Edwards. If he lives up to his potential, Liverpool will have a player worth many times his initial investment. At £1.79million, he would struggle to make the club a loss, even if he doesn’t break into the Liverpool first-team. And the future is looking really bright at the back for Liverpool – an area that has been a weakness for them before. If they conclude a deal for van den Berg, he’ll join fellow Dutchman Ki-Jana Hoever on the fringes of the Liverpool team. Hoever became the third youngest player to make his debut for Liverpool last season, in the FA Cup defeat against Wolves. De Ligt might be the future now, but Liverpool could be sitting on two Dutch stars of their own.
