Man United are set to make a formal offer for Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, according to the Evening Standard.

Th 21-year-old broke through into the Newcastle first-team last season and turned heads in the side before an injury cut his season short.

Now, the Evening Standard claim that United will make a formal offer for the Newcastle star as soon as they’ve bought a right-back and a centre-back.

Good move for United?

Longstaff is a future star – he proved that much in his eight-match run for Newcastle before a knee injury cruelly cut his season short. His underlying stats from WhoScored are impressive, with almost two tackles and dribbles a game, and an 80.9% pass success. He’s also the sort of player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants at United. He’s already shown his intent by signing Dan James from Swansea and the new United manager wants to build a ‘proper’ United team, with hungry young stars who can grow into the squad of the future. Longstaff is that sort of player.

Likely to happen?

It will be really tough to prise Longstaff from Newcastle. Forget a United star of the future, Longstaff is seen as precisely that at Newcastle, and Benitez and fans would be furious if he was sold. However, there is so much up in the air at Newcastle this summer that it’s impossible to predict anything. There’s talk of a takeover from the Bin Zayed Group and Rafa Benitez has still not signed a new contract despite his current deal expiring at the end of this month. If the right offer came in, you can’t say that Newcastle wouldn’t sell. And a move to United given what’s going on at both clubs would surely be tempting for Longstaff.
