Christian Eriksen has been by far one of Tottenham’s most influential and important players during his time at the club.

Excepting perhaps Harry Kane, the Dane has consistently been the most dangerous and creative force in Spurs’ squad, and his mastery over the ball in the centre of the park has been a crucial factor in helping to propel Mauricio Pochettino’s men into the upper echelons of the European game.

That’s why it will have come as a real hammer blow to hear that the player is keen to seek a new challenge this summer, as reported by Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet.

The assumption has been for quite some time that were Eriksen to leave the club, he would be likely to sign for Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants heavily linked with a move for a long while, as reported by the Independent.

But that switch could be in jeopardy if the latest report from the Daily Mail is to be believed.

The outlet claims that Real have to make up a shortfall of £135 million in player sales to meet Financial Fair Play regulations, and if they don’t, they will not be able to snap up Eriksen.

Whether that would stop the Dane leaving full stop is a matter of some debate, but certainly taking the main contender out of the race for his signature will give supporters the faintest glimmer of hope that he might still stick around.

It’s a slim chance, but at the moment, Madrid’s shortfall could be a major lifeline in keeping the 27-year-old.
