Liverpool have re-ignited a move for 25-year-0ld Lyon attacker Nabil Fekir, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Nicolo Schira.

He claims that Liverpool have offered the player a five-year deal worth £69k-a-week (£3.5million/€4million per year), and that Lyon want at least £44.5million for their playmaker.

Fekir is out of contract next summer and Liverpool have been linked heavily with a move for him in previous windows. He scored 12 goals and added nine assists last season.

Good move for Liverpool?

Yes. Fekir had another profitable season season, with nine goals in 29 Ligue One games – although this was half the number he got in the 17/18 season – and he’s a quality playmaker and full France international. Liverpool could still benefit from a player like him in the squad. He can turn matches and unlock defences and he would be yet another massive weapon in the Liverpool arsenal – a side that doesn’t struggle to score goals without him.

Likely to happen?

We’ve been here before and we imagine Liverpool fans will be rolling their eyes at the latest link. However, Fekir is out of contract in 2020 and this would represent the last window that Lyon could get a big fee for him. Liverpool would be able to sign him on a pre-contract deal in January and get him for free the following summer. That’s why the figures don’t add up to us. £44.5million is a hell of a lot to pay for a player they could get for nothing in 12 months. And the £69k-a-week wages don’t sound enough for a player of Fekir’s status. We’re sure this one will rumble on this summer but we’d be surprised if it came off at this price – although Liverpool could probably be persuaded to pay less.
