Tottenham are currently in pole position to sign Sporting CP midfielder Bruno Fernandes, according to Correio da Manhã.

The Portuguese newspaper claims that the 24-year-old is valued at £62.3million, but Spurs are currently hesitating in their hunt to sign the Portugal international.

It is understood that while Spurs are front-runners for Fernandes at this stage, a move from Liverpool “can change everything” as the attacking midfielder has previously revealed that he is a fan of Jurgen Klopp’s style of football.

Manchester United are also said to be interested in Fernandes, but Premier League champions Manchester City have backed out of the race for his signature.

OPINION

Tottenham need to try and do some early business this summer because Mauricio Pochettino needs to welcome several new additions to his squad and it is better to get some out of the way this month rather than waiting until later in the window. Fernandes is one player that Spurs should not be dallying on amid rising interest from their Premier League rivals. The 24-year-old was superb for Sporting CP last season as he scored 32 goals and supplied 18 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions for the Portuguese giants. If Christian Eriksen leaves Tottenham this summer, which is looking very likely, the Portugal international would be a very good replacement. While he is not as good as Eriksen, Spurs will struggle to get someone in to match the Dane’s quality. Fernandes is as good as Spurs fans can hope for and they need to advance their efforts to sign him as soon as possible to avoid Liverpool hijacking their efforts.
