Daniel Levy is plotting to table a new “monumental” contract to Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen, according to El Confidencial.

The Spanish news outlet claims that Levy does not want to sell the Denmark international, 27, this summer, even though his contract expires next year and has thus far rejected two new deals.

It is understood that Real Madrid are hoping to sign Eriksen this summer but after meeting at dinner in Madrid last week, Levy has told Real president Florentino Perez that his and Mauricio Pochettino’s priority is to get the playmaker tied down to a new deal rather than cashing in on him.

El Confidencial reports that Real Madrid believe it will be hard for them to sign Eriksen after Levy’s chat with Perez last week but if the Dane was to turn down this next contract offer, a move could be back on the cards.

OPINION

Eriksen has been slated for a surprised amount of his performances this season and he was especially criticised for his anonymous display in the Champions League final defeat to Liverpool at the weekend. However the Denmark international is without doubt one of the best in the world at what he does and the lack of clarity surrounding his future is bound to be having an impact on how he is performing on the pitch. Tottenham need to do their best to keep hold of Eriksen, but if the player wants to leave and money is not an object to him, what more can Levy and Pochettino do other than convince him that North London is a better place to be right now? Real Madrid have gone backwards in the last 12 months while Spurs have reached their first ever Champions League final and have moved into their beautiful new stadium. At the end of the day though, this is Real Madrid, one of the biggest and best clubs in the world.
