OPINION

If there’s one man who loves a wind-up, it’s Noel Gallagher. The former Oasis maestro and current High Flying Bird seems to get a kick out of antagonising people wherever and whenever he can, and isn’t too bothered about who he upsets in the process. In that respect, he is very much the rockstar equivalent of Leeds United. Completely sure of their own self-worth, perhaps having seen better days, there are a lot of parallels that can be drawn between Noel and United. Maybe that’s why, despite the fact that he is Manchester City through and through, he seems to hold a kind of cool reverence for the Yorkshire giants. And if there was any doubt over his fondness for Leeds, his latest stunt will surely ender him to a lot of fans. Playing Heaton Park in Manchester on Friday night, the artist dedicated ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’ to any United fans in the audience. The song, which became an unofficial anthem for Leeds when they beat Derby in the play-off semi-final first leg, quickly came back to bite the club on the backside, but by dedicating it to any supporters on Friday night, Noel is surely taking the first step in allowing it to be reclaimed by the Elland Road faithful.
