Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier has admitted that his performances this season have “not been good at all”.

The 28-year-old – who has made 38 appearances for the club this term – failed to keep up the consistency and impressive performances he showed for England at the World Cup last summer.

Spurs finished the campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League final and, speaking to Sky Sports News, Trippier personally reflected on his performances over the campaign.

“If the manager selects me to play, I will always give everything I can. Everybody makes mistakes – I have made plenty this season but I am the one to own up to them,” the defender said.

“I have had plenty of interviews about my performances this season and it has not been good at all. I am the first one to say that.”

OPINION

It hasn’t been the greatest of seasons for Trippier – the player himself is right – and it has resulted in him losing his place in the England squad. It’s sad for the player, you have to admit that whether you are a Tottenham fan or not. He was one of England’s heroes in the World Cup in Russia last season, scoring that fantastic free kick that gave the nation hope against Croatia in the semi-finals. But since then, he has dropped off and there have been a few times this season where that has been evident, such as the own goal he scored against Chelsea. If there are any positives at all to take from being dropped from the Three Lions, one is that Trippier can now focus on getting his head down and working to get back to his best. At his best, he is one of Tottenham’s and England’s key players – we have seen that countless times before – but right now he is far from that level and he can now focus on getting himself back to top form ahead of the new season.
