Ask any Rangers fan what needs to be improved upon to try and catch Celtic at the top of the table and you would get a multitude of different answers.

Some would point to their defensive fragility, the likes of Joe Worrall and Connor Goldson culpable for a number of goal scoring opportunities for the opposition.

Others might point to their inability to turn draws into victories, with the joint second highest amount of draws in the Scottish top flight.

One area which certainly looked to be lacking in the required quality was the midfield, although not through a lack of options available to Steven Gerrard.

The likes of Ross McCrorie, Ryan Jack and Andy Halliday were joined by Scott Arfield last summer, the Canadian international bringing his Premier League experience and attacking skill set to help the Gers with goals in the centre of the park.

The former Burnley man eventually finished on 12 goals – the third most at Ibrox behind Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier and as many as Jack, Halliday, Ovie Ejaria and Lassana Coulibaly combined.

Goals from the midfield is obviously somewhere Gerrard needs to improve on but so is having a willing box-to-box talent, the aforementioned names either central enforcers who focus on breaking up play or attacking threats with their eye on creating or scoring goals.

January signing Glen Kamara has provided that much needed energy so far but is lacking on the goal front, with just one goal in first team club football during the entirety of his career.

However, the 23-year-old Finland international has revealed he is getting special attention on the training ground from Gerrard with a focus on his goal scoring exploits, telling the Daily Record: “Steven Gerrard has taught me a lot of things. He has helped me with personal training sessions and is currently teaching me to shoot more.

“He was very good at that and goals were a big part of his game. The exercises he has done with me have been excellent.”

As Kamara says, there are few better midfielders to learn how to shoot from than Gerrard and if he can take the manager’s advice on board, Kamara is going to take the club to the next level.

He has everything in his armoury but goals right now, with energy, dynamism, physical attributes and excellent ball control – adding some goals to that woefully low tally would be a massive boost for the Light Blues.
