Leeds are likely to sign Brighton centre-back Ben White, according to journalist Phil Hay.

Hay, formerly of the Yorkshire Evening Post, and a journalist with a strong handle on Leeds news, delivered the transfer update on his personal Twitter account on Thursday afternoon.

Fans were keen to find out news on incomings with Jack Clarke zeroing in on a move to Tottenham.

Hay said Leeds were trying with three targets – Helder Costa (Wolves), Ryan Kent (Rangers) and White.

Of the three Hay said that White was the most likely, going as far as saying, “That should get done”. He added that there was “optimism” over Costa and no movement on Kent.

OPINION

The Clarke deal – almost done now with the player completing a medical in north London according to Sky journalist Lyall Thomas – will hopefully end up as being seen as good business for Leeds, but the fans want to see incomings now. Leeds know all about White after he played 90 minutes for Newport in the FA Cup win over the Whites in January 2018, but the question will be whether he’s being brought in as cover or as a starter – and if the latter, which of Liam Cooper or Pontus Jansson will make way. White is a player who will fit the Bielsa way of playing – he’s calm and composed on the ball according to one Peterborough fan and likes to play out from the back. The player that could really make an impact though is Helda Costa. The 25-year-old signed from Benfica for £13.5million in 2017 after a scintillating loan spell that saw him pick up Player of the Year, Players Player of the Year and Goal of the Year awards at Wolves. The Portugal international was a key part of Wolves’ Championship-winning side but has struggled in the Premier League. The fact that there is optimism around him will excite Leeds fans and if they land him it will more than makeup for the departure of Clarke.
