Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay has poured cold water on reports have linked Leeds with another move for striker Matej Vydra.

Leeds were heavily linked with a move for the then Derby striker last summer but it broke down over wage demands and his desire to move to a Premier League club.

He got his wish with a £10million move to Burnley but it hasn’t worked out for him – the Czech international scored just once in 13 appearances in the league and the Sun have reported that Burnley will accept what they paid for him 12 months on.

That’s seen a number of outlets attempt to link Leeds again but, according to the ultra-reliable Phil Hay, it won’t happen.

He was responding to a Leeds fan who asked if Vydra would be an option for Leeds again. Hay replied, “Given the way it all went down last summer, I’d seriously doubt it.”

OPINION

You can tell it’s silly season when Leeds are linked with a player who is on the market for £10m and Premier League wages, after owner Andrea Radrizzani has said they have little money and will be focusing on loan deals this summer. Vydra was a player Leeds wanted last summer but he wanted a move to the top-flight and got his wish, but it’s looking unlikely that he’ll still be there next season. He might well have to take a drop in wages to secure a Championship move, where he top-scored in the 17/18 season, but he still might struggle. Championship clubs are working under strict Financial Fair Player regulations with Birmingham already suffering a points deduction last season. Loans will be much more prevalent this summer and a gamble on Vydra, who had a disappointing season with Burnley, could be seen as a step too far for all but the wealthiest of clubs.
