Tottenham are yet to make their move for Fulham wide man Ryan Sessegnon, according to Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold.

The 19-year-old, who made 35 Premier League appearances last season, has been heavily linked with a move to north London this summer, with the Mirror going as far as to suggest that the Fulham ace was “set to sign” for £40 million.

But Gold disputes this claim, instead suggesting that Spurs will wait until Sessegnon returns from the U21 Euro Championships later this month.

Writing in a piece for Football.London, he said: “Football.London understands that while Spurs are interested in making a move for Sessegnon they have yet to enter into talks with Fulham this summer over his transfer.

“Tottenham could be set to make their move for Sessegnon once his involvement ends in the European U21 Championships with England this month.

“The teenager flies out to Italy with the national squad on Friday after their training camp.”

OPINION

This report is a bit of a mixed bag really. On the one hand, it will be a disappointment to a lot of Spurs fans to learn that the club aren’t as close to signing Sessegnon as initially thought, but on the other, Gold is making it very clear that they are planning to do just that in good time. Sessegnon would be a fine addition to Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, and is a player who has the potential to really kick on and become a top tier talent with the right amount of backing and support. There are few, if any, English clubs where he would get better opportunities than at Tottenham, and it makes sense for him to sign now while he still has so much to learn. £40 million, if that is the fee, will not be cheap, but over time, if he lives up to the hype he has generated, Sessegnon should more than pay that figure back.
