Gillingham claim that they have beaten Rangers in the race to sign former Manchester United midfielder Matty Willock.

The English League One side confirmed via their official website on Thursday that they have signed the 22-year-old on a two-year deal.

They also say that they had to fight off a lot of interest to sign the London-born midfielder, with Rangers one of the sides that were also interested in a deal this summer.

OPINION

If Rangers were beaten by a third-tier English club to Willock’s signing then it is clear that the central midfielder is not good enough for the Glasgow giants. The only reason why he would turn down Ibrox to join Gillingham is probably because he was offered a better first team roleĀ  there while Steven Gerrard is unlikely to have offered him a spot in his starting line-up amid all the competition for places in that position. Willock spent last season on loan at League Two side Crawley Town and Rangers’ Scottish Premiership rivals St Mirren. He played 14 times in all competitions for St Mirren last season and didn’t really do anything great, so maybe it is a good job that the Light Blues have missed out on snapping up the former Man United player this summer. For Willock’s sake, he better hope he has more influence at Gillingham next season than he did in his loan spell in Paisely.
