Tottenham star Eric Dier has been blown away by the “quality” of Sporting CP midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

Spurs are reportedly in the hunt to sign the 24-year-old Portugal international, with O Jogo claiming that the North London club has tabled a £62.4million bid for his services.

Speaking after England’s penalty shoot-out win against Switzerland in Portugal on Sunday, former Sporting CP midfielder Dier admitted that while he does not watch as much Portuguese football as he wants to, he still knows all about the abilities that Fernandes has.

“He has a lot of quality,” Dier told Portuguese news outlet O Jogo

Dier added: “I’m trying to follow the Portuguese league, but it’s not always easy.

“But I know perfectly well that he is one of the [best] players in Portuguese football.”

OPINION

Dier’s verdict on Fernandes is one that should be taken with a pinch of salt. The England international is hardly going to bad-mouth a player who plays for his former side and could even be on his way to North London this summer, but it is still good to hear someone on Spurs’ books talking highly of one of the club’s targets. Fernandes would definitely be a good addition for Spurs this summer. The 24-year-old scored 32 goals and supplied 18 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions for Sporting CP last season as they won the two domestic cups in Portugal and finished third in the league. With Christian Eriksen likely to leave in the summer, Spurs would do very well to snap up Fernandes as a replacement. He is a goalscoring midfielder who has all the talents of a playmaker, plus he can take set-pieces. Dier would love to get on the end of some of his corners and free-kicks next season.
