OPINION
How does Eric Dier get in the England squad, let alone the starting line-up? Tottenham’s 25-year-old midfielder has done very little of note with the Three Lions badge on his chest, other than scoring the winning penalty against Colombia last year. He has also done very little for Spurs in the last year, which makes it all the more strange that he is always called upon by Gareth Southgate. Dier is played as a defensive midfielder but he comes across as a centre-back who is playing out of his comfort zone. Maybe it is worth seeing if he can drop back into the defence, by both club and country next season. Mauricio Pochettino may want to think about that in Spurs’ pre-season. As for Dier’s display against Switzerland on Sunday, it is not hard to understand why so many England fans were tearing the midfielder to shreds. He was appalling and really shouldn’t be called up again until his form improves massively.
