If there wasn’t so much at stake, the ongoing situation at Newcastle United would almost be laughable.

Mike Ashley’s ownership has descended into farce in recent years, and the constant charade surrounding his efforts to sell the club, usually just before a transfer window, has become an annual pantomime on Tyneside.

The proposed takeover from the Bin Zayed Group has felt different up to this point, with the remarkable pace with which the story broke catching many off guard and convincing the Toon Army that a buyout was imminent.

The reality of the situation has been somewhat different.

A lack of information from the club itself, coupled with increasing doubts over the veracity of Sheikh Khaled’s approach.

Those doubts will not have been helped by the latest verdict from the Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards either.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, he said: “By my reckoning the next two weeks will determine whether Newcastle begin the season in disarray, turmoil and division or with genuine cause for optimism and excitement.

“I’m wavering towards the former but I can be a miserable so and so.

“Feel free to ignore me”.

The reliable journalist went on to claim in a further tweet that he had heard that while multiple groups are interested in buying from Mike Ashley, one had pulled out of the race for United.

Obviously, Edwards is largely making his decision based on a gut instinct here, but there are few people as well informed as he is about what has been going on at St. James’ Park.

Perhaps his pessimism is indicative of a pattern of events so predictable and poor that it has become difficult to imagine anything but a letdown on Tyneside.

But the fact that he is voicing these views, with his professional credibility at stake, would suggest that he has a pretty good reason for thinking them.

For Newcastle fans, the purgatory goes on.
