BBC pundit Noel Whelan believes that goalkeeper Kiko Casilla has issues at Leeds that could see him leaving the club this summer.

Casilla arrived from Real Madrid in the summer on a free transfer but has had a very shaky start to his career at Elland Road.

And Whelan believes that reports linking him with a move away will have come from Casilla’s side.

“I’m not sure what’s happened between manager and player or whether the player is not happy, not settled at the club,” Whelan said to Football Insider.

“Generally it’ll be the player asking to move rather than the manager who’s bought somebody in from Real Madrid.

“Whether he can’t settle, whether he feels he needs to go back for family reasons – then you’ve got Peacock-Farrell who’s kicking up a fuss. We could end up with no keepers!”

Casilla is currently the highest paid player at Elland Road, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, on a salary of £30,000-a-week.

OPINION

Casilla might well have joined Leeds with the expectation of playing in the Premier League next season. His enthusiasm for the job might well have stalled somewhat now he’s facing the prospect of playing in the Championship. However, with Bailey Peacock-Farrell waiting impatiently in the wings, Casilla moving might well be in the best interests of the club. £30k-a-week is Premier League-level wages and that could be used to bring in a really influential Premier League player on loan. If Casilla is the one agitating for a move then Leeds fans might be happy to wave him on his way. Certainly on his short time between the sticks so far at Elland Road, Casilla has proved no better than Peacock-Farrell. And, while Whelan might have been joking about being left with no senior goalkeeper, it’s a situation that needs sorting before the summer gets too long.
