Aston Villa are interested in Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The 6’1″ Uruguayan [Transfermarkt] hit 13 goals in all competitions for the La Liga side this season, and has represented his country 12 times.

The 22-year-old also has a release clause of £43.5 million written into his contract in Spain, as detailed by the Guardian.

Nixon confirmed Villa’s interest via his personal Twitter account.

Good move for Villa?

If Aston Villa can land Maxi Gomez, their fans will be absolutely ecstatic. The South American is an old-fashioned, traditional centre forward. His robust hold up play and his eye for goal would make him an asset for any Premier League side, and if Villa could snap him up it would be a massive coup. If Dean Smith’s men are to make a real go of life in the Premier League then they will need a couple of quality additions, and Gomez would certainly fall into that bracket. Is it likely to happen though? In a word, no. Gomez will not come cheap, and there are a host of sides with a lot more financial firepower waiting in the wings to steal him away from Celta Vigo. If Villa could pick him up it would be one of the coups of the window. It’s the kind of move that all Villa fans will be craving, definitely but whether or not they’ll actually get it is another matter entirely.
