Leeds United have made tying down striker Kemar Roofe one of their top priorities this summer and have opened contract talks with him as a result, according to The Mirror

The newspaper report that the forward has 12 months left on his contract after signing from Oxford back in 2016, and the Yorkshire club are now keen to get a new and improved deal sorted.

The Mirror also claim that Roofe will be offered a significant pay rise should he commit his future to the club, and sign a new deal at Elland Road.

It is believed that Roofe and his team may leave Leeds waiting because there is no need to rush a decision even though he is on course to be a free agent next summer.

The attacker has scored 15 goals in all competitions this season for the Whites, and is now one of the clubs main priorities going into the new Championship season.

OPINION

Leeds could certainly do with tying Roofe down to a new deal, especially considering he was so effective for the Whites last season, and could be key again for the club in their bid for promotion to the Premier League. It seems like an obvious decision for Marcelo Bielsa to want to keep the 26-year old at the club for the foreseeable future, after the impressive season that Roofe had in the manager’s first campaign with the club. If the club were to not offer him a new deal however, he would be a free agent come the summer of 2020, which would give him the choice of the club and terms in which he would like to play his football under, so the Yorkshire club really need to get this new deal sorted, ideally before the new Championship season. For this reason alone, it seems likely that Roofe will be offered a large increase in wages to stay with the club, in order to convince him in to staying at Elland Road for future seasons.
