Gary Neville couldn’t resist a dig at Leeds after Salford were drawn against Marcelo Bielsa’s side in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

When the draw was made on Thursday he tweeted, “Welcome back into my life Leeds. Not seen you for 15 years.”

Leeds were relegated from the Premier League in 2004 and haven’t got back to the top-flight since, although they came mightily close last season, finishing third and losing in the play-offs to Derby.

However, as many Leeds fans pointed out, Neville’s recollection isn’t very sound.

In 2010, Leeds – then in League One – traveled to Old Trafford in the third round of the FA Cup and came back with a famous victory.

Leeds beat a Man United side featuring Neville 1-0, with Jermaine Beckford scoring the only goal of the game and condemning United to their only third-round FA Cup defeat under Alex Ferguson. In fact, United had never before been knocked out of the FA Cup by a lower league team during his reign.

You’d think Neville would have remembered that but Leeds fans queued up to remind him ahead of the clash against Salford – a club jointly owned by Class of ’92 players Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and David Beckham.

The game will be played in the week commencing August 12th and, given the intrigue behind the fixture, we’d imagine it will get selected for TV coverage.

Salford were promoted to League Two last season and this time around Neville will be cheering on the underdogs.

Here’s what the Leeds fans had to say:
