Celtic will struggle to sign transfer target Sam Baldock from Sheffield United this summer, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claims that the Blades are unlikely to sell the 26-year-old after he playing a starring role in their promotion to the Premier League this year.

It is understood that Scottish champions Celtic have already made an approach to sign the former MK Dons right-back, who is in the final year of his contract at Bramall Lane.

However Sky’s update says that Chris Wilder wants to keep hold of the players who won promotion so they can prove themselves in the Premier League.

OPINION

Celtic really need to sign one or two new right-backs this summer with Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa at the end of their contracts, Jeremy Toljan returning to Borussia Dortmund after his loan spell and Anthony Ralston not really being good enough just yet. Baldock was in top form in the Championship last season, appearing 27 times for Sheffield United as they won promotion. The 26-year-old player in more of a wing-back role in Wilder’s system and that could suit Celtic pretty well due to them being on the front foot in most of their domestic fixtures. Baldock is also in the prime of his career so would definitely be a good addition at Parkhead. However it would seem that Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell will have to forget about snapping up the Blades right-back based on this update by Sky Sports. It may still be worth keeping tabs on any developments regarding Baldock’s contract though.
