Jamie Carragher heaped praise on Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold after England secured third place in the Nations League, beating Switzerland on penalties.

The Sky pundit described the Liverpool youngster as “Beckham-esque” as he delivered cross after cross into the Switzerland box.

“The one everyone will be talking about is Trent at right-back,” Carragher said during the Sky commentary of the game (Sky Sports, Sunday, 4pm).

“He’s been outstanding. Beckham-esque I called him at half-time. He’s been the big winner in this game.”

OPINION

Alexander-Arnold had a brilliant end to the season with Liverpool and he’s taken this form into the summer with England. He was brilliant on Sunday for England, where he should have cemented his spot at right-back. There’s been talk of whether the youngster can move up to midfield in the future – Gary Lineker is one who thinks he could make it in that position– and that’s only going to increase after Carragher’s comparison with David Beckham. He’s also just one of the reasons why fans are right to be getting excited about the future of the England team. They might have failed in the semi-finals agin, but with players like Alexander-Arnold, Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling in top form, England will be looking at the next Euros and thinking they can finally lift another major trophy. The future is bright for England and for Liverpool.
