Kris Boyd has urged Celtic to get a deal over the line for Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull.

Motherwell announced on their website on Thursday that they had agreed a fee with the Hoops over the sale of the 19-year-old, who had a fantastic breakthrough season at Fir Park.

Turnbull – who made his first appearance for his current club in January – went on to make 33 more before the end of the season and scored 16 goals while providing seven assists.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast [Wednesday, 8:01pm, 1:03:10], former Rangers striker Boyd insisted the midfielder would be a great addition for Celtic.

“Celtic have always been a club who will sign players that if they come in and does well in a year, two years or three years’ time, can we sell him on,” the 35-year-old said.

“I think David Turnbull ticks that box for Celtic. He showed last year at Motherwell what he can do, and going to Celtic would give him an opportunity at a higher level and I think by doing that we could see him emerging on the international scene as well.

“The kid’s got talent, there’s no doubt about that. Some of the goals he’s scored, right foot, left foot, some of the passes, he’s not one of these players who likes to get on the ball. He makes the ball do the work.

“If Celtic are into him, they really need to go and get this one done because they took a lot of stick for the John McGinn one but I think it does tick a lot of boxes for Celtic.”

OPINION

Boyd is exactly right with these comments. You look at the types of players Celtic have brought through in the past few years and how much profit they have made on them – the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Fraser Forster – and David Turnbull definitely looks like he could join that list. From Mothwerwell’s announcement, it looks as if a deal will get over the line and that it is just a matter of waiting for the transfer to be finalised. What a great signing Turnbull could be for Celtic. At the age of just 19, he has already shown so much promise and is already one of Scotland’s most coveted young talents. And, as Boyd says, there is every chance he could progress onto the international stage if he moves to Celtic, a move which will really put him in the limelight and would get Steve Clarke excited about his future potential. Overall, it would be fantastic for Neil Lennon’s side to finally confirm Turnbull.
