Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has insisted that a new left-back should be the club’s “top priority” in the summer transfer window.

Steven Gerrard’s side signed Borna Barisic from NK Osijek at the start of August, but the 23-year-old had a stop-start season – making 27 appearances in all competitions – due to several injury issues.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast [Wednesday, 8:01pm, 58:43], Boyd claimed that the Ibrox side must be looking to add support for Barisic in the coming weeks and months.

“There is no doubt that Rangers need a left-back,” the former striker said. “The recruitment last summer wasn’t good enough. They signed a couple of players off the back of the Europa League but right away they didn’t look as if they were comfortable.

“It’s one thing playing in front of two or three thousand fans to then playing in front of 51,000 fans. It’s a big, big jump. I felt as if a few of them froze last season. [Borna] Barisic, we never really saw, he was always in and out and injured.

“There’s no doubt that Rangers need a left-back, that’s the top priority this summer.”

OPINION

Boyd is absolutely bang on with these comments, Rangers definitely need a new left-back this summer. While Barisic had some good games for the Gers last season, his injury record meant that his overall rating for the season took a big hit. Had the Croatian international stayed fit, he would have looked more at it and may well have nailed down his spot in the team, but the fact is he did not appear enough to convince Gerrard that he is the only left-back the team needs. They need to add support, as it will benefit everyone in the team. Not only will it give whoever comes in the chance to prove their worth in the side, but it will surely keep Barisic on his toes and make him more motivated to play better next term, which can only be good in the long-term as Rangers look to close the gap on Celtic.
