Aston Villa are expected to table a “formal” bid worth £15million to sign Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The newspaper claims that Mings, 26, is Villa’s number one priority signing this summer after the former Ipswich player showcased a run of red-hot form while on loan at Villa Park in the second-half of last season.

It is understood that Mings is keen on a permanent switch to the West Midlands club but Bournemouth still need to greenlight the deal before anything can progress.

Good move for Aston Villa?

Dean Smith has made signing Mings his top priority for a good reason.

The 26-year-old was a brick wall in the defence for Villa in the second-half of the season as he made 18 total appearances and helped the Midlands side seal their return to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs.

Although £15million is a lot of money for a newly-promoted side, it is justified because of how well Mings did on loan there and how he is going to be better than most other players that Aston Villa can sign for a similar amount.

Yes, he’ll be stepping up from the Championship to the Premier League with Villa, but he should be able to continue his good form.

Likely to happen?

It would be a surprise if Villa didn’t manage to sign Mings.

There’s a good chance the £14,000-a-week [Spotrac] ace will leave the Vitality Stadium because his transfer value has soared while on loan at Villa Park, but whether or not he ends up playing in claret and blue again is another thing.

However there does not seem to be any other clubs pressing as hard for Mings right now so Villa should be able to snap up the centre-back this summer.
