Aston Villa are part of a trio of clubs interested in signing Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter, according to Independent.ie.

The news outlet claims that Championship sides Fulham and Stoke City are also keen on the 29-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Cardiff City.

Independent.ie claim that 15-time Republic of Ireland international Arter, who has two years left on his contract on the south coast, recognises that his Cherries chances are limited and is open to leaving the club this summer in order to secure regular playing time.

Arter played 25 times in the Premier League for the Bluebirds last season, providing two assists.

Good move for Villa?

This would be a wise move from Villa. Arter is a solid Premier League midfielder who would be a great addition to the Villa team if they want to stay in the Premier League next season. He has 94 top-flight appearances and would add vital experience to the side. This is a move that would benefit not only Villa, but Arter himself. He seems to have recognised that his chances with Bournemouth are limited but is unlikely to be prepared to drop down to the Championship to secure playing time, so Villa may be the best bet.

Likely to happen?

With two years left on his current deal with Eddie Howe’s team, any fee to take him away from Bournemouth would likely be a sizeable one. But the report from Independent.ie says that Howe is keen to free up his wage bill and reinvest in his squad by getting rid of some players, and if he also realises that Arter’s chances will be few and far between, then a deal could be thrashed out for cheaper than expected. As has been mentioned, Arter will likely want to stay in the Premier League so this is definitely one to keep an eye on.
