OPINION
Aston Villa are reportedly ready to table a bid for Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland and while there are many fans on Twitter who are blown away by the 26-year-old’s potential switch to Villa Park, there have to be options out there that are better value for money. According to the Sun, Villa are preparing to launch a £20million bid for Butland this week, but Stoke want £23million for the former Birmingham shot-stopper. While Butland is a great goalkeeper who belongs in the Premier League, Villa should really be trying a bit harder to sign Cardiff’s Neil Etheridge as he is more recently proven in the top-flight and could be a lot cheaper. That’s not to say that Butland would be a bad signing though. He is a top goalkeeper who has nine caps for England. He is very experienced and is an upgrade on what Villa already fan. It’s not hard to see why many Villa fans are drooling over this transfer report if you take it at face value, but looking at the bigger picture, there has to be a better deal out there somewhere.
