OPINION

Aston Villa are considering a £10m bid for Southampton left-back Matt Targett and there are plenty of Aston Villa fans who think he’d be a great addition to the squad as Dean Smith prepares for the Premier League.

The news was reported in the Sun and comes after Targett has struggled to get past Ryan Bertrand at Southampton and secure regular game-time.

At 23 he’s at a pivotal point in his career and after dropping down to the Championship with Fulham on loan, we think he’d jump at the chance of joining Aston Villa and staying in the top-flight.

He wouldn’t necessarily be guaranteed a starting role at Aston Villa but left-back is a problem area for them. Current number one is Neil Taylor and the 30-year-old is short of fans at Villa Park.

Targett is a left-back with plenty of attacking spirit in him and we think he would establish himself as the number one for Dean Smith in a hurry. One fan said he’d be a “brilliant signing” while another said he would be “much better” than Taylor.

Here are the best reactions to the potential £10million bid:
