Aston Villa are on the brink of signing Jota from Birmingham City, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The newspaper claims that a deal that takes Jota, 27, from St Andrew’s to Villa Park is “complete”, however there is yet to be an official confirmation made by either of the Second City rivals.

It is understood that Villa have agreed to let Gary Gardner join Blues on a permanent basis, as well as paying £4million to sign the Spanish attacker, who has previously played for Dean Smith when at Brentford.

Good move for Aston Villa?

Jota has barely been good enough for the Championship while playing for Birmingham, so the chances of him performing to an acceptable level in the Premier League are low.

Ever since joining Blues for a club record £6.5million in 2017, Jota has only scored eight goals and supplied 11 assists in 75 appearances across all competitions.

Although the £40,000-a-week [Independent] attacker did do well at Brentford when Smith was managing him before, it seems like he might struggle to recapture that form in claret and blue in the top-flight.

Villa have lost £4million and a player with transfer value to sign the Spaniard, and that is quite a poor deal.

Likely to happen?

According to the Birmingham Mail’s information, the deal is completed but is pending an announcement from either Aston Villa or Birmingham.

It should be made soon though because this deal appeared to move very fast and there were reports that both players underwent medicals on Friday.
