Toby Alderweireld has hailed the Tottenham fans as “amazing” after his season finally came to an end with a 3-0 win for Belgium against Scotland.

Following the Euro 2020 qualifier on Tuesday night, Alderweireld posted a tweet with four points and four ticks, hailing the clean sheet Belgium kept and the three points that earned them.

He was also positive about the 18/19 season and said, “Amazing fans all season long” before signing off by saying it was “Time to recharge”.

Alderweireld’s future is still uncertain with a release clause being triggered that could see him leave for £25million this summer.

However, he said recently that he was expecting to stay at Tottenham for another yet.

OPINION

There’s a definite possibility that Alderweireld – against all odds – could still be a Tottenham player next season. Most fans thought that was unlikely after the release clause was triggered, but there have been no concrete offers for him yet. He would only move to certain clubs and for certain wages, and it might be that he decides to leave on a free next summer, which would strengthen his hand in any future deals. However, there must be a lot of clubs looking at that £25million release clause and thinking that he represents a real bargain. Tottenham have been linked with a move for Bournemouth centre-back Nathan Ake but he is said to be seen as a long-term replacement for Jan Vertonghen. There are likely to be a number of new faces coming into Tottenham this summer, too, with Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso among the names being linked.
