Rangers are set to miss out on signing Queen’s Park striker Michael Ruth, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that the 17-year-old had a trial with the Glasgow giants last summer and has been closely watched over the last season at Hampden Park.

Hibernian were also said to be interested in the Scotland youth international, but it is understood that Aberdeen have won the race for the centre-forward’s signature.

OPINION

Time will tell if missing out on Ruth was a good or a bad thing for Rangers, but if he was that impressive, why didn’t they sign him last summer after his trial with them? Since returning to Glasgow side Queen’s Park after his trial with Rangers, Ruth has managed just seven total appearances. He scored his first senior goal in the 4-0 win against Albion Rovers in April, but did little else to suggest that he could ever step up at Rangers and be a centre-forward in their first team in the future. Aberdeen may have unearthed a gem in beating Rangers to the 17-year-old’s signature, but we won’t know for sure whether he will become any good. Rangers fans might want to keep a close eye on how he developments in the coming years because this is one that could come back to bite the Ibrox club. Director of football Mark Allen will surely hope that isn’t the case.
