Rangers are Oldham defender George Edmundson’s first choice club to join this summer after a host of clubs were rebuffed in the hunt for his capture, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claim that the 6’2″ (source: Transfermarkt) centre back is in fierce demand, with Championship sides Wigan Athletic and Hull City both said on Thursday to have joined Rangers in seeing offers rejected by the north west club over the last 24 hours .

It is stated that the Gers saw a £500,000 bid turned down and that they will not be held ransom over getting Edmundson to Glasgow, with the defender having turned down a new contract and having put in a transfer request, Ibrox his preferred choice of destination.

Opinion

Now is the time for Rangers to turn the screw on Oldham, who surely cannot hold out with an unhappy player for too long. Yes, they are entitled to look for a fee they deem reasonable for their man but at the same time they do not hold too many of the cards in negotiations. He has turned down a new deal, he wants a move to Ibrox and with a year left on his contract, they risk losing him for a nominal compensation fee in 12 months. If Rangers want him, they should be able to get him – even if it means letting Oldham sweat for a couple of weeks as they seem to cool their interest. The only thing they have to be careful is of one of the other clubs said to be keen coming in and pouncing for his capture. Championship clubs should have no trouble meeting Oldham’s demands and they could well leave Rangers disappointed by coming in early and snapping him up.
