Wolves have the advantage in the race to sign Benfica right-back Andre Almeida, according to The Express.

The report claims that Premier League trio Wolves, Everton and West Ham are all keen on bringing the defender to England who is valued at £8million.

Wolves, however, have an advantage in the pursuit of the defender, with country-mate Nuno as manager and several Portuguese players on their books.

The club have used Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes in the past and the club could call upon Mendes to help bring the 28-year-old to Molineux.

Almeida featured 53 times in all competitions last term as Benfica were crowned Portuguese champions – and he scored twice and made 12 assists in 33 league games this season.

Good move for Wolves?

Almeida is a versatile defender who can play on either side of the defence and also defensive midfield, and he would be a solid addition for Wolves. Versatility will be a big thing for Wolves next term given that they will be playing European football – they will need options and squad depth in order to be a competitive force. The 28-year-old brings a wealth of experience and was a regular for Benfica last season – with that in mind, he could really provide Matt Doherty with stiff competition.

Likely to happen?

Given the huge Portuguese presence at Wolves, the defender may feel as if that is the move that fits him best. Almeida played in the Champions League last term and with Wolves qualifying for the Europa League, he will still harbour European ambitions. This reason alone separates Wolves from Everton and West Ham and could be a deciding factor. It’s still early days in terms of the transfer window but Wolves have do seem like the team most likely to sign him. This one could definitely come to fruition.
