Everton winger Theo Walcott has praised the Toffees fans for providing a “massive” boost to the club’s performances this season.

Having started off shakily in his first season at the Goodison Park helm, manager Marco Silva steadied the ship in the final weeks of the season, finishing with home wins – and shutouts – against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Walcott added that, along with his teammates beginning to adjust to Silva’s tactics, the fans have more than played their part this season.

“They’re massive, 100%,” the 30-year-old said. “I feel like they’re the missing piece of the puzzle we always need for the team.

“They’re fantastic. Home and away throughout the course of the season they’ve been brilliant, even when we’ve had some terrible performances.

“Today [against Tottenham] they’ve shown their numbers, and I didn’t really hear the Tottenham fans at times because they were that loud. Particularly when Liverpool were losing [the Premier League title] I think they got louder.”

OPINION

Everton capped off their season in decent fashion on Sunday with a draw against Tottenham, adding to the hefty number of points the club has taken off top-six teams this term. Along with the scalps over United, Arsenal and Chelsea at home, Everton have also taken a point off Merseyside rivals Liverpool – and one which looks to have been very decisive in handing the title to Manchester City for a second season in a row. But as Walcott says, the Everton fans have got to be praised too. There have been some results this season which have been abysmal, including the League Cup and FA Cup exits to Southampton and Millwall respectively, and the 3-2 defeat away to Newcastle. But, as you would expect, the fans have stuck by the team and eventually helped the club rediscover its form in the late parts of the season. The Toffees now have a strong base from which to push on next season.
