Tottenham want to sign Boca Juniors midfielder Agustin Almendra in the summer transfer window, according to Diario AS.

The Argentine news outlet claims that Almendra, 19, is attracting attention from some of the biggest clubs in Europe due to his impressive form at Boca this season and his £23.7million release clause.

It is understood that Spurs “will try to convince” the central-midfielder to join them in the summer before triggering his release clause.

However they reportedly face competition from Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Juventus, Valencia, Manchester City, Porto and Napoli in the race for Almendra’s signature.

Good move for Tottenham?

Almendra has done very well at Boca Juniors this season, even though he has been in and out of the side.

The Argentina Under-20s captain has made 19 appearances in all competitions this term, scoring one goal and supplying one assist from the centre of the Boca midfield.

He has had a couple of knee injuries, which might not be concerning, and you would have thought a player valued at £23.7million and wanted by clubs like Barcelona and Man City would be playing a lot more often.

Spurs should definitely keep tabs on developments regarding Almendra, but there is not a whole lot to suggest that he is worth his full release clause just yet.

Likely to happen?

There are way too many clubs reportedly interested in Almendra for this to be taken seriously by Tottenham fans.

Even if Almendra did leave Boca Juniors in the summer, which is “inevitable” according to AS, the chances are that Spurs will be beaten by teams that are a lot less frugal with their money.
