Tottenham are plotting a summer swoop to sign Freiburg defender Robin Koch, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that Toby Alderweireld is “committed to leaving” Spurs in the upcoming transfer window once a £25million release clause in his contract becomes active.

It is understood that Koch, 22, is seen as a potential replacement and Spurs would have to pay £12million to prise him away from Bundesliga side Freiburg.

Good move for Tottenham?

Koch is a good young player and while he is naturally a centre-back, he has been played as a defensive midfielder for most of this season by Freiburg.

The 6ft 4 (transfermarkt) colossus has made 23 appearances in all competitions for the German club this season and in the vast majority of them he has been played at the base of the midfield.

It shows that the Germany Under-21 international does have great ball-playing skills and he could be a good replacement for key defender Alderweireld, but it might take him quite some time to get settled into Spurs’ defence.

Spurs would do well to sign Koch for just £12million but they need to look at centre-backs who are closer to the level of Alderweireld and Koch still seems quite a way off that.

Likely to happen?

Mauricio Pochettino has not spent a penny in the transfer market in the last two windows, but he is bound to be buying players in the upcoming summer due to players like Alderweireld leaving.

The Belgium international does seem as though he will exit Tottenham so signing a player like Koch could happen.

He’s young, cheap and playing well so he does seem like a realistic addition for Spurs.
