If you asked which Celtic player was on loan from a German giant and Champions League side based on their performances this season, Jeremy Toljan would probably not have been anyone’s first guess.

Signing for the Hoops in January, the full back has not had much of an impact at all during his five months in Glasgow, making 14 appearances, of which 10 came in the starting XI.

He hardly looked good enough to keep his place at Parkhead and it will come as little surprise if he does not return over the summer, the Hoops looking for a different quality of player – which is why his claims over his future will surely have Neil Lennon in stitches.

The 24-year-old was quoted by the Scottish Sun as saying: “I’m looking forward to playing for Dortmund next season. You never know what will happen in football, but my plan is definitely to stay with Borussia Dortmund.

“I had a great time at Celtic. At the weekend we completed our season by winning the Scottish Cup Final to make it a treble. It was a great experience and due to my time in Scotland I have returned a better player and I also have winners’ medals from the league and the cup.

“Now I want to try and make the same impact with Dortmund.”

Now, not to belittle Scottish football, but comparing the division to Germany’s top flight is like chalk and cheese – and he could hardly shine for the Bhoys against the likes of Dundee and Motherwell, so how he hopes to contend with the likes of Bayern Munich will be beyond even the most optimistic among us.

Lennon must be in bits at the thought of Toljan, a man who failed take Mikael Lustig’s place in the starting XI, thinking he can play for Dortmund next season, but you can be sure the Hoops boss will not be looking for him to return to Glasgow.
