Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson was baffled by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski in West Ham’s 3-0 win against Southampton at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In the opening minutes of the games, Fabianski was lucky to not concede as he looked very hesitant on the ball and almost gifted a goal to Soutnampton’s Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Luckily Ryan Fredericks spared the blushes of the Poland international, but Liverpool legend Thompson could not believe what he was seeing from the Hammers goalkeeper.

“He’s made a couple of errors trying to clear it a bit quicker,” said Thompson on Sky Sports News on Saturday [03:18pm].

“Oh my goodness it was absolutely shocking. And then he gets the ball in the inside-right position from a pass back. He can see Ryan Fredericks and thinks I’m going to give it him but then changes his mind and nearly passes it straight to Elyounoussi.

“Luckily enough Fredericks has come back and got a challenge in, but oh my goodness he just about got away with it.”

OPINION

Fabianski has been brilliant all season and has arguably been West Ham’s best player. He has made so many saves to keep the Hammers in games and they will definitely be a lot further down the Premier League table if it wasn’t for him. Unfortunately he was not at his best on Saturday against Southampton but at the end of the day, it didn’t matter too much as he did not concede from one of those odd moments he had on the ball. West Ham fans won’t mind if Fabianski has one bad game in 37 Premier League matches and if anything, it was probably just a bit of a complacency from him as the end of the season is approaching and there is no much pressure on him anymore. It cannot be stressed enough how well the former Arsenal and Swansea shot-stopper has played this term though. He was unfortunate to not be named in the Premier League team of the season.
