Rangers full-back James Tavernier has said that his side will “come back stronger” after ending the season with a 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock.

Alfredo Morelos found the net in the second half at Rugby Park on Sunday, but his goal was not enough for victory as Steven Gerrard’s men finished second in the Scottish Premiership table.

Tweeting after the game, Tavernier insisted that there are better things to come at Ibrox under Gerrard.

“Another season done! Lots of ups and downs but I know this squad will come back stronger. Thank you for your amazing support all season. See you soon.”

OPINION

To say that this was Steven Gerrard’s first season in charge, he’s done a pretty stellar job. Let’s face it, it was going to be impossible for the former Liverpool skipper to come in and pip Celtic – who have dominated Scottish football for years – to the title. This will take time, and although the nine-point gap between the teams suggests that Celtic romped home, they certainly didn’t. Rangers had this Celtic team worried for a good period of the season, and there is no doubt that with some new signings, the Ibrox club will be raring to go. Not only will Rangers be looking to close the gap on their Glasgow neighbours, but they will also want to do better in the cup competitions. Some disappointing displays in the domestic cups were added to by failure to get out the group stages of the Europa League, so that will be a priority too. All in all though, it is a good start for Gerrard at Rangers.
