Chris Sutton has heaped praise on Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn, claiming the Scot has been “outstanding” this season.

The 24-year-old scored Villa’s second in their 2-1 play-off final won over Derby County on Monday afternoon – his ninth of the season to cap off a stellar campaign.

And Sutton wasted no time in singing McGinn’s praises.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, Sutton said: “Wouldn’t have wanted to miss out on signing John McGinn… outstanding season”.

OPINION

Sutton is bang on the money here. McGinn has been exemplary this season, and a key figure in Villa’s promotion campaign. While many of his teammates took a while to settle into the campaign, the Scot was at it from the off, and has made a massive impact during his first season in England. He’s been so good, in fact, that the Villans must have been worried about losing him this summer had they not booked their own place in the top flight. It will be fascinating to see how he gets on in the Premier League, but if his performances this season are anything to go by, then he will no doubt thrive. He is the quintessential midfield battler, but he possesses a quality on the ball and an eye for the spectacular that have really helped to set him apart this season. Hopefully, he will continue to show his quality when he hits the big time in August
