Chris Sutton has blasted Brendan Rodgers for his “arrogance” after the former Celtic boss reflected on his exit from the club midway through last season.

Rodgers left the Hoops in February to have another crack at Premier League management with Leicester City, having been sacked by Liverpool in 2015.

Speaking to Premier Sports in an interview published on their official Twitter account, the Northern Irishman insisted that he would “absolutely” return to Celtic one day as it’s an incredible club.

Replying to that interview, however, Sutton took issue and said that Rodgers was “patronising”.

OPINION

Sutton has well and truly thrown his dummy out of the pram here. He has a point though. Rodgers, here, is saying that he would love to go back to Celtic if the challenge presented itself to him again, but surely if he is saying that he would not have left for Leicester. Rodgers clearly had a bone to pick with the Premier League and was keen to prove that his sacking from Liverpool would not define his reputation in the English top flight. He may well do that, but it just seems odd to come out and say he had admiration for the club and would love to go back there when he was so keen to jump ship. You’ve got to remember, Rodgers’ departure came at a time when he could have led Celtic to the treble treble. That is an unprecedented moment in the club’s history, and the fact that he was willing to sack that opportunity off to move back to England surely shows his true thoughts on his time at Celtic, regardless of what he says here.
