Chris Sutton has claimed that “there was an offer” for Jose Mourinho to join Celtic this summer.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss, who was sacked by the Red Devils in December, has been out of work since and was linked with a move north of the border earlier this month.

Speaking on a BT Sport live broadcast (1:20pm), Sutton alleged that the Portuguese boss was indeed the subject of an offer from the Glasgow club.

“There’s going to be a lot of managers in for him,” the pundit said on BT Sport.

“Mourinho was heavily linked and I’m led to believe there was something in that in terms of there being an offer. I don’t know the exact details, but there was an offer. I think we’ll find out very very quickly [who will be Celtic boss] after the cup final.”

OPINION

If Sutton is right with this claim about Mourinho getting an offer to join Celtic, it’s a pretty bold move from the Parkhead club. We’ve seen in the past the Portuguese boss go to teams with lots of money; the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, but if he moved to Celtic, his financial power would likely be severely restricted. One thing is for certain, it would have been magnificent to see him back in management and even more magnificent to see him try his hand at Scottish football. Mourinho has never had such an experience in his esteemed managerial career. Another thing Celtic have to be wary of is leaving it too long before appointing another manager. If they want to stick with Lennon, they should do so and put a stop to any rumours soon. As Sutton says, it is likely to be after the Scottish Cup final next Saturday when Celtic announce something.
