Steven Gerrard insists that he is the man who should get the blame following the Gers’ final day defeat at Kilmarnock.

Rangers finished nine points behind Celtic on 78 points after the 2-1 defeat and now Gerrard will look to continue his Rangers rebuild in the coming months.

Goals from Chris Burke and Eamonn Brophy sunk the Gers and Gerrard admitted afterwards that it should be himself who receives the blame.

“I will take the hit for it – it is my responsibility and if anyone wants to point any fingers, point them in my direction,” as quoted in The Express.

OPINION

It has been a season of progression for Rangers. The club is now in a better place under Gerrard and they have proven that they are able to overcome Celtic. Rangers beat Celtic twice at Ibrox last season and if they are able to perform on a consistent basis, they may be serious contenders for the title next term. Despite the defeat, there was nothing at stake during yesterday’s game and it meant nothing in the grand scheme of things – Rangers should enter the summer full of confidence. The club must invest in the coming months if they are to bridge the gap next season and perform more consistently –  they must bring in a handful of quality additions. Keeping hold of Alfredo Morelos will be key. His 30 goals have been a huge helping hand and losing him would seriously damage the Gers going forward. It should be a busy summer ahead of the new season.
