Former Liverpool defender, Steve Nicol, believes that it will take more than £35 million to sign David Neres and he doesn’t think the player should make the move to Anfield.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for the 22-year-old, who is interesting numerous European giants after an impressive season with Ajax.

“If I’m Neres, I’m looking at Liverpool’s front three and I’m asking myself ‘Am I going to this team to start? Or am I going to this team to backup to begin with?’.

“He’s certainly at a level of his ability and what he’s producing that he has to go somewhere and play,” said Nicol in The Daily Star.

“I think that rules Liverpool out. Everything else is perfect, the amount of money they are talking about is a little strange.

“I read somewhere it was like £35m – there’s no way they’re letting him go for as little as that.”

OPINION

David Neres has been one of Ajax’ star performers this campaign. The Dutch giants have enjoyed their best season in recent memory and by the club knocking sides like Juventus and Real Madrid out of the Champions League, their players have attracted serious interest. Neres has bagged 12 goals and assisted 15 this term, for a 22-year-old playing at such a high-level, his stats are highly impressive. But wtih Salah, Mane and Firmino proving to be one of the best forward lines in the whole of Europe, it’s difficult seeing any player replacing one of those three. Ajax will be a tough nut to crack in regards to selling their prized assets. With Liverpool already donning such a dangerous front three, Neres’ price range may be too much of a price to pay for a position where they already have strength in abundance. Nicol is spot on, it’s very difficult to see Ajax letting one of their best performers leave for that price.
