Gordon Smith has urged Rangers to sell Alfredo Morelos this summer.

The Colombian has 29 goals for the Gers this season, but former Ibrox man Smith believes that Steven Gerrard should let the hitman go.

Writing for the Sunday Post, he said: “Rangers play with more fluidity when he is not involved, and this was proof positive.

“If the club receive a big bid for the Colombian in the summer, they should take it and use part of the funds to strengthen their squad.”

OPINION

This is a big call from Smith, but you can see his reasoning behind it. Morelos has been irresistible for the Gers when he has played this season, but the fact of the matter is that he he hasn’t played anywhere near enough. His disciplinary record is borderline disgraceful, and in his absence, Jermain Defoe has really come to the fore in recent weeks. If Gerrard can get a decent fee for him, and by rights, he should fetch a decent wedge, then that money can surely be invested elsewhere. The Gers are in a promising position at the moment, but they need to invest wisely this summer, and that task would be made a whole lot easier if they had a sizeable fee from Morelos’ sale lining their back pockets. In the short term, selling him might not prove to be the most popular of decisions, but shifting the South American could be really prudent piece of business.
