Sky Sports pundits Liam Rosenior and Lee Hendrie both believe West Brom were harshly done to in the play-off semi-final at Villa Park.

With 15 minutes to go, the visitors were winning 1-0 and looking like leaving Villa a mountain to overcome at the Hawthorns on Tuesday.

However, Aston Villa scored twice, once from the penalty spot, before Dwight Gayle was sent off for colliding with the Villa goalie late on.

West Brom were also denied a penalty when Tammy Abraham made contact with Mason Holgate in the box.

Both Sky pundits think the decisions went against the visitors.

Talking of the Gayle sending off on the Sky Sports coverage of the game (Saturday, Sky Sports, midday), Rosenior said: “I think it’s incredibly harsh. It happens so quick. As a striker you just want to get to the ball in situations like that. He sees that at three times the speed that we’re seeing it.”

Former Aston Villa player Lee Hendrie was in agreement and also thought West Brom should have had a penalty.

“It’s no red card for me,” Hendrie said. “He’s gone in to try and win the ball, he’s pulled out towards the end. I think it’s a very harsh decision on Dwight Gayle.”

Looking at Abraham’s challenge on Holgate, Hendrie said, “It’s a penalty. I don’t want to be biased here. It’s a blatant one for me. There’s contact on the man before the ball.”
