Everton boss Marco Silva has insisted his side has to aim for European football and that must see the Toffees put their money where the manager’s mouth is.

Speaking to Sky Sports in his press conference before the Burnley game, Silva said: “For us as a club, it has to be our aim and we have to be always playing in European competitions”.

Silva went on to add: “Let’s see what we can do, but our aim, 100%, has to be to play in Europe every single season to keep growing as a club. It always has to be a pleasure, a fantastic challenge and not a problem.”

A club with the budget that Everton have at their disposal has to be targeting European football as a minimum objective, mid-table purely is not good enough.

The Toffees have had a transfer deficit – that is how much more they’ve spent than earned in transfer fees – of £224.44million (Source:Transfermarkt) in the past five years which is more than clubs such as Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham.

With this sort of expenditure the ambition should most likely be Champions League but that is still an unrealistic target for Marco Silva’s side. Europa League has to be the goal and anything but this will be a disappointment as mid-table is just not good enough.

Wolves are expected to take up the final Europa League spot this season with Everton having to settle for mediocrity once again, but the end of season form should give fans hope with their side beating three teams competing for the top four in the space of a couple of months.

Marco Silva was right to set this target and now he has to go out an achieve them goals or face more disappointment at Goodison Park.
