Alan Shearer has sent a message to loanee forward Salomon Rondon after the Venezuelan was award the Newcastle Player of the Year award.

The forward, on-loan from West Brom won the award on Thursday after an official announcement on the Newcastle website and Twitter account.

Club legend Shearer sent Rondon his congratulations on Thursday afternoon on his personal Twitter account, praising his efforts in a 10 word message: “You’ve had a very good season big man. Well done”.

Rondon has enjoyed a great season under Rafael Benitez with the 29-year-old being involved in 17 goals in his 31 Premier League appearances. Part of Rondon’s success was the partnership created in a front three with fellow forwards Ayoze Perez and record signing Miguel Almiron.

OPINION

Alan Shearer will know a good striker when he sees one and his opinion is huge in the North East. His tweet summed it up perfectly, Rondon has enjoyed an excellent season under Rafa Benitez and he should be on the list of permanent transfer targets in the summer. His goals are not the main part of his game, the attention he requires from opposition defences leaves space in and around the final third for his teammates and this was highlighted when he troubled Virgil Van Dijk more than most in their final home game on Saturday. If Benitez can secure his signature in the summer then his Newcastle side will be built around the front three that has seen there end of season form improve dramatically. Rondon is likely to want a move to Newcastle and should his parent club West Brom fail to earn promotion in the Championship play-offs, the deal will be given a huge boost.
