Sutton: McGregor was stupid

Chris Sutton has blasted Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor for his sending off against Hibernian last Sunday.

The veteran stopper was given his marching orders for a bizarre kick out in the 89th minute, and will now miss this weekend’s Old Firm clash against Celtic.

And Sutton gave a typically frank assessment of the incident.

Speaking to the Daily Record, he said: “Allan McGregor has done extremely well but you only have to look at the pictures of the incident at Hibs to see how stupid he was.

“It’s not the first time this season and it could have been costly if Rangers had put a bit more pressure on Celtic. He needs to change but whether or not he can at his age, I don’t know.”

OPINION

Sutton is absolutely right here. What was McGregor thinking? His side were winning, he had just booted the ball down field, and then he chooses to go and lash out for no apparent reason at the nearest Hibs player. To then add insult to injury, he spent the next few seconds rolling around as if he was the one who had been attacked. This was unnecessary, pathetic, and quite embarrassing. The fact that he will now miss an Old Firm too just rubs salt in the wound, and all in all, he should be ashamed of himself. Wes Foderingham will come in, and he is a very capable deputy, but in a game loaded with as much passion and tension as this one, you want your best players out there on the pitch. McGregor has been brilliant this year, but he’s no use to anybody in the stands, and Steven Gerrard will no doubt be having a stern word after such a ridiculous act of stupidity.
