Rangers are battling Premier League giants Manchester City for talented 16-year-old Liam Smith, according to the Scottish Sun.

The report claims that Rangers have been targeting the youngster but that the competition for his signature will be fierce after the attacker paid a visit to Man City.

Kilmarnock hope to persuade Smith to stay but will have their work cut out.

OPINION

One for the future for Rangers and the Scotland Under-16 has bags of talent. He scored the winner for his country against Malta in March and he’s been turning heads at Kilmarnock. His displays have put hm on the radar south of the border too, though, and it sounds like Pep Guardiola’s side are serious in their pursuit of the young attacker. Smith has paid a visit to the Premier League champions elect and they’ll be hoping that he’s ready to move south of the border. Things are happening at Ibrox though and the opportunity to develop under the watchful eye of Steven Gerrard must be a tempting one. Gerrard has a great record with young players from his time at Liverpool. Smith is only 16 too and you’d have to think that staying in Scotland would be better for the young player. This is one to watch.
